My students are the most eager little kindergarten kids around. We are a classroom of 21 children, and within the classroom, we represent 8 different countries and 5 different home languages! Our school is located in one of the most dynamic cities in Connecticut, and our students are both ethnically and socio-economically diverse. About half of our students have had preschool, while the other half has not. This makes for a challenging achievement gap that we work hard each day to close!
Kindergarten is unique developmentally, in that we have 4 and 5 year old students in one classroom. Developmentally, some students are ready for the social aspects of our curriculum, while others are not. Some students are ready to work independently, while others have not found their independence yet. All of this makes for a classroom that is busy, bustling, loud and interactive, to try to meet the needs of all of our students!
My goal through your donations is to provide materials to my students that will allow them to succeed. I want to make sure the children that are below grade level are getting everything they need to help them make progress, while the children on grade level are pushed above and beyond! What does this look like? Puzzles, games, and manipulatives for math and literacy skills. Children in the corner of the room playing a sight word fishing game, while others are playing memory with letters. Still other children will be working on sound manipulation with bingo chips during an adult-led activity, while other children will be working on Hot Dots and Tag Readers, during a listening center activity. I have purchased many materials on my own, and would love the help to purchase more of these materials at various levels of instruction! As we are currently working through centers, I would also need more organizational materials for these at times, like laminating pockets, plastic bins, and plastic baggies.
